I founded From Seed Design in 2008 as a landscape and graphic design firm providing both design and horticultural services to clients in the Central and Northern Virginia areas. I work primarily with residential clientele but also offer my services to local landscape contractors/installers and Charlottesville area builders.
From Seed Design was formed in response to working in the high-pressure, dynamic environment of television production and as a publicist in the book publishing industry. I found myself in front of a computer screen more than I could countenance and I was ready to spend some time outdoors -- away from technology. I went back to school and studied horticulture and landscape design at the University of Richmond gaining a certificate of horticulture while apprenticing under landscape designer Virginia Rockwell in Gordonsville, VA. I then worked with a local landscaping firm, J.W. Townsend Inc., as their nursery manager, a fine gardener and eventually landscape designer and project manager.
A landscape design created by From Seed balances long-term sustainability and overall aesthetics with practicality and the challenges of an ever-changing climate and less than desirable regional soil structure. Each design is carefully planned out based on the exposure of the area, the soil type, and client preferences. Once you have your design in-hand, I am able to assist you with the process of contracting with an installation company that is suited to your project or I can provide you with do-it-yourself guidance. During installation, I offer project management services in which I interact with the contractors onsite insuring that all parties are working together to facilitate a smooth experience for the client. I keep in touch with my clients and make yearly visits to their gardens so that I can monitor the growth and development of the landscape as a whole. My goal is to create gardens that develop into a successful landscape that can be enjoyed throughout the years.
